Since the publication of “Is Disengagement Contagious,” I fear the world has only become more unsettled. At work, we often avoid discussing the ongoing conflicts in the Middle East, even though we are all aware of the massive violence both at home and abroad.

In the past, my role involved military contracts, and I was constantly surrounded by the realities of war – Humvees, M1114s, and the tireless efforts to up-armor and protect our troops. While few enjoy war, we were largely united in our patriotism after 9/11.

Nowadays, my work is no longer in the defense industry, and the water cooler conversations have shifted. The war may not be at the forefront, but we still grapple with the ripple effects – supply chain issues, economic constraints, and an overall uneasiness. As workers and leaders, we are all dealing with additional distractions and challenges.

Amidst this, I have personally struggled to maintain civility and engagement. As a People & Culture Specialist, I know the importance of understanding, empathy, and unity. Yet, I have failed at this on multiple occasions, both as an individual and as a professional.

I’m now asking myself, and challenging you, to reflect on how our mindsets, words, and actions are affecting ourselves, our colleagues, our companies, and our country. Civility and engagement start with each of us, within our sphere of influence. Can we be the glue that holds our communities together? Can we lead by example, fostering positivity and productivity, even in the face of frustration and anger?

It’s not easy, but it’s necessary. We are all connected, and the choices we make today will shape the world around us. Let’s commit to doing better, to being the solution rather than the problem. It starts with intention – the intention to understand, to empathize, and to bring out the best in one another. Together, we can navigate these turbulent times and emerge stronger, more united, and more productive than ever before. 👥
